Security in the Context of Dependability
نویسندگان
چکیده
Security, as an architectural quality, is often thought to be measured in terms of availability, confidentiality and integrity. These qualities are part of a broader quality dependability. There are inherent tradeoffs among the qualities that define security and dependability. Architectural tactics, or architectural design decisions, that enhance one aspect of dependability can decrease security and viceversa. In addition, this is a multi-scale problem in that different quality attributes are measured on different scales of reference including some that are not quantitative. In this paper we present a qualitative approach to managing interactions among the attributes used to define security.

متن کاملCAMAC: a context-aware mandatory access control model
Mandatory access control models have traditionally been employed as a robust security mechanism in multilevel security environments such as military domains. In traditional mandatory models, the security classes associated with entities are context-insensitive. However, context-sensitivity of security classes and flexibility of access control mechanisms may be required especially in pervasive c...

This seminar brought together researchers and practitioners from the different areas of dependability and security, in particular, from fault-tolerance, safety, distributed computing, langelanguage-based security, and cryptography. The aim was to discuss common problems faced by research in these areas, the differences in their respective approaches, and to identify research challenges in this ...
متن کاملSurvivability of Operating Systems: Handling Vulnerabilities
Dependability and security are flip sides of the same coin – linked conceptually though differing in process! Both arise from the occurrence of design or operational “deficiencies” in a system though differ in the processes of invocation of these deficiencies. Security issues often pertain to the intentional abuse of these deficiencies (vulnerabilities) to perturb the system operations; dependa...
متن کاملDependability Properties of P2P Architectures
A system’s dependability can be thought of as being the trustworthiness of the system. The difficulty when attempting to measure dependability is that it is typically a context sensitive property. While one user might regard a system to be dependable for the particular activities they use it for, another user might regard it to be totally undependable for their activities. As well as being cont...
